Without any notion of how she was going to face Jack, or of how she was to continue sharing a house with him, or indeed how she was to survive the rest of her life firmly entrenched in a horrid state of unrequited love, Dorothy headed downstairs to discuss the press release.
Rosa was taking refuge at the palace because, despite the appalling weather, reporters had besieged Barns. A worried Keith accompanied her, leaving Royno and Jonjo to hold the fort and watch over Shelly and the basement therapists.
Both directors agreed that issuing a statement might take the heat out of the situation. Rosa set about drafting one, and the women practiced reading it aloud a number of times. While it did not list every threat made against Dorothy, it made clear the latest shooting was not the first attempt on her life.
When they were satisfied with the content, they went in search of the men in order to get their opinion. They tracked them down to the dining room where they were clearly involved in a heated debate. As the women entered the room, they were in time to witness Clive and Keith squaring up to each other in a most alarming manner.
Catching sight of Rosaâs face, they suddenly shut up and did their best to look innocent. Dorothy was grateful for the table separating her from Jack, since it made it impossible for her to throw herself into his arms. He sat quietly in the corner, looking tired and grimmer than usual. Marco had a haunted look about him, as if his thoughts were unusually sobering.
âWhatâs all the yelling for, guys?â Rosa demanded. âIs the boss not under enough strain without yee roaring like bulls at each other?â
None of the men replied and even Keith avoided her eye.
âKeith, sweetheart,â Dorothy spoke softly. âIâm inclined to agree with Jive. I didnât feel very comfortable when I saw them with those two starlets last night when they should have been with me. Iâd prefer you to take them off the hiring list. Starting now, Iâd like them as my fulltime, permanent team. I feel it would be better all round. Iâm sure the others will do us proud out in the big, bad world, but not these two. Is that okay?â
Keith eyed her suspiciously. âI hope nobody got to you and persuaded you to say that, Boss,â he spoke in a tight voice.
âNobody got to me,â Dorothy replied sadly. âJive were standing ten feet away from me last night, and only pure professionalism kept them by those two actors. Although that didnât stop me seeing their faces. Yikes. Itâs better for us all this way. Jackâs not as tense when theyâre with me, which is an added bonus.â
Keith nodded. âYeah, it is. All right, Boss, whatever you say. Jive will not be adding to the income of SBA anytime soon. My two most experienced men as well. Shite.â
All animosity forgotten, Jive smirked at him and each other. Even Jack and Marco perked up a little.
